Environmental Services Technician 

 The Human Resources Department announces the position of Environmental Services Technician reporting to the Facilities Specialist II. This position is considered essential and is required to report to work as scheduled during University closings.

Responsibilities include: sweep, mop and scrub floors, stairs, and other surfaces inside/outside of all buildings; scrub, strip, wash and polish floors using heavy industrial type floor machines; vacuum rugs in offices, classrooms, halls, and public areas; shampoo rugs periodically using heavy extraction machines and other rug shampooing machines; clean/dust furniture, exhibit cases, pictures, door trim and chalkboards; clean, disinfect and service lavatories, rest rooms, showers, and locker rooms; wash windowsills, interior and exterior windows, glass in corridor doors, and wash glass and trim in entrance doors and vestibules; wash and/or clean interior wall spaces by hand or with powered wall washing machine, remove, wash, replace and adjust blinds and curtains, vacuum and wash ceiling lights and HVAC fixtures; work on ladders or scaffolds as required; move furniture and complete set-ups/tear-downs for University functions and outside rental groups; clean and service cigarette urns/ashtrays; collect and place in containers or plastic bags trash and debris, place trash in collection area for removal; replace liners in wastebaskets and trash containers; adjust, clean and oil cleaning and scrubbing machines, and change brushes, pads, rollers, belts, bags, and other attachments; move and assemble heavy furniture, supplies and miscellaneous equipment, as directed; make up Residence Hall beds with linens for selected rental groups; report to supervisor items that need repair (doors, lights, furniture, faucets, etc.) that may be noticed while performing duties; make initial attempt to unclog toilets, sinks, bathtubs, and showers; replace batteries in smoke detectors; put drain conditioner in all sinks, toilets, shower and floor drains on a routine schedule; remove snow, using manual tools, from building steps, entrances, and other areas not easily accessed by motorized vehicles ( including spreading anti-skid material at building entrances); receive and unload delivery trucks; perform related work as required; maintain an acceptable attendance record, punctuality and meeting deadlines, participate in training sessions and seminars; maintain a functional awareness of typical hazards of the workplace as well as special hazards that may be encountered; follow established procedures for dealing with such potential hazards, promptly reporting all accidents or injuries to supervisor; adhere to all University and departmental policies, procedures, and safety regulations.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two years of experience in applied trade.
  • Ability to receive work orders verbally or in writing, ability to work well with co-workers.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, lift, climb ladders or scaffold, remain standing and walking for long periods of time, ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to deal with reactions to chemical substances.
  • Must work outside in all types of weather, at times in unpleasant areas, must clean spills of various substances including body fluids.
  • Overtime is required as needed; vacation approval may be limited during peak activity periods.
  • Ability to report to work during any University closings.
  • Must be able to work any shift at any University location.
