Observed Holidays and Holiday Pay

1.0 Policy
1.1 It is the policy of Robert Morris University to compensate employees who work on any of the University recognized holidays or in the alternate, provide employees with an alternate day off.

2.0 Scope
2.1 This policy applies to full-time and regular part-time employees.

2.1.1 This policy does not apply to part-time employees.

3.0 Procedure
3.1 The Assistant Vice President for Administration and Human Resources will prepare the Holiday Schedule that is to be used by the University. It will consist of national holidays and other observed holidays. The holiday schedule is to be approved by the Officers of the University. The schedule is attached to this policy.

3.2 Observed National Holidays

3.2.1 Full-time category I employees (non-exempt) working on any of the observed national holidays shall be paid at a rate of two and one-half times their regular pay. The department manager may select one of the following options to compensate employees for holiday work:

3.2.1.1 The employee is paid two and one-half times their regular rate of pay, or

3.2.1.2 The employee is paid one and one-half times their regular rate of pay plus one day off in lieu of the holiday.

3.2.2 Full-time category I employees (non-exempt) who work on national holidays observed by the University and those holidays fall on a day that is different from the day that the University observes the holiday, shall be paid in the same manner in which the University pays employees who work on the day the University observes the holiday.

3.2.3 Full-time category II and III employees (exempt) who work on the national holidays observed by the University will receive another day in lieu of the holiday.

3.2.3.1 The compensating day off is scheduled at the discretion of the department manager.

3.2.4 Regular part-time employees shall be paid for national holidays based on their normal hours worked.

3.2.4.1 This only applies to regular part-time employees if they were normally scheduled to work on the day. Employees not scheduled to work on that day will not be paid holiday pay.

3.3 Other Designated Holidays

3.3.1 Full-time category I employees (non-exempt) working on other observed holidays shall be paid at a rate of two times their regular pay. The department manager may select one of the following options to compensate these employees for holiday work:

3.3.1.1 The employee is paid two times their regular rate of pay or

3.3.1.2 The employee is paid their regular rate of pay plus one compensating day off.

3.3.2 Category I full time employees (non-exempt) who have their regular day off fall on any other holiday listed on the Holiday Schedule shall receive a compensating day off.

3.3.2.1 The compensating day off is scheduled at the discretion of the department manager.

3.3.3 Full-time category II and III employees (exempt) that work on the other holidays observed by the University will receive another day in lieu of the holiday.
 
3.3.3.1 The compensating day off is scheduled at the discretion of the department manager.

3.3.4 Regular part-time employees will not receive holiday pay for other designated holidays.

4.0 Definition of Terms
4.1 National Observed Holidays:
  • Martin Luther King Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day
  • New Year's Day

4.2 Other Observed Holidays
  • Good Friday
  • The day after Thanksgiving
  • Designated Christmas break days
